It is a cosmetic treatment that uses gentle pulses of intense, optimized light to treat undesirable pigment and vessels which can occur as a result of aging and lifestyle choices. The wavelengths of light targets vascular and pigmented lesions, which absorb the energy as heat, which stimulates your body’s natural healing process to remove the damaged cells without harming the surrounding tissue.
The procedure can be performed in as little as 30 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. Most people feel little to no discomfort during the procedure since cooling is done either by icepacks or within the laser handpiece.
Immediately after treatment, the skin may feel tingly and look slightly or moderately pink (like a sunburn). This usually lasts 2 to 24 hours. The targeted lesions will initially get a bit darker indicating damage, which will slowly disappear over the next few days. You can apply makeup as needed, and a high quality sunscreen is a must. Although there is no real downtime, we suggest you avoid heavy exercise, alcohol consumption on the day of treatment.
You can expect to see a decrease in the appearance of skin pigment and vessels for a more even skin tone in about 1-2 weeks. For best results, a repeat treatment within 4 weeks is usually advised for deeper lesions, and depending on the severity of sun damage.
There are a number of lesions that are caused by excessive sun exposure that are not treatable with IPL. These include: Melasma (hormonal age spots), moles, seborrheic keratosis, milia, skin tags, birth marks, melanoma (or cancerous lesions). Other methods to remove these lesions will be required and a referral to a dermatologist may be suggested.
